Buyer’s Guide

How to Choose a Wedding Neon Sign

A wedding sign does one job: it makes the moment look designed. The right piece turns a plain wall into a photo backdrop, a sweetheart table into a focal point, a proposal into a scene. Here is how to choose the wording, size and power for yours.

1 · Wording: names, dates and short vows

The classic build is two first names plus the date – it photographs from every angle and never needs context. Short vows and phrase pieces (better together, choose us, still choosing you) carry more personality and suit couples whose day has a theme. Keep it under six words: at reception distance, long lines shrink into decoration while short lines stay legible in every photo. Initials are the quiet third option – a monogram piece flatters both the ceremony arch and, five years later, the front door of your first house together.

2 · The proposal piece

A will-you-marry-me sign has one metric: does it fill the frame? Go bigger than feels natural – 36 inches and up – because the photo is the artifact. Choose a dark, uncluttered backdrop and run the sign at full output so the letters read against dusk. If the spot has no power (rooftop, beach, trail end), order the battery version and rehearse the swap; the glow dying mid-kneel is the one unrecoverable mistake. One practical note for the photographer: brief them on the sign’s location before the ceremony so they build the glow into the shot list instead of fighting it in editing.

3 · Size and the photo wall

Size to the people in the pictures. A backdrop sign should span at least the shoulder width of the couple posing in front of it – roughly 40–60 inches for a two-person wall – so the composition balances. Sweetheart-table pieces sit at 24–36 inches; small props for the guest book or cake table read best under 20. When in doubt, upsize: a too-small backdrop sign is the most common wedding regret we hear. Rent the florals, buy the sign – it is the one backdrop element that works again at the anniversary dinner.

4 · Battery or plugged in

Walk the venue before choosing power. Ceremony arches, garden paths and heritage halls often have zero reachable outlets – that is what battery packs are for, and a charged pack runs a full evening at mid brightness. Indoor receptions with wall power behind the head table are simpler: plug in, hide the cord along the drape line, and use the dimmer for the dance-set downgrade. Ask the venue coordinator for a photo of the wall during setup hours – outlets hide behind drapes and podiums, and the picture settles the battery question in ten seconds.

5 · Color and your wedding palette

White and warm white are the workhorses – they flatter every skin tone and match every florist palette, which is why most wedding galleries run neutral. Blush and rose pink earn their keep against greenery walls and terracotta themes. Bold color (red, deep blue) is a statement move that pays off when the rest of the decor is restrained – the white sign page shows the neutral range in full. Gold and amber tones are the rising choice for evening receptions – they read as candlelight on camera, which is the exact mood most couples are buying.

6 · Hanging at the venue

Venues limit what may touch the walls, so plan for stands: a pipe-and-drape frame or a rented grid wall carries a sign at exactly the height you want with zero holes. Clear command strips work on smooth surfaces for lighter pieces. Assign the mount to a person who is not getting married – the full hardware walkthrough, including frame options, is in our hanging guide. Practical tip: number the frame joints with tape during the trial build at home; venue setup at 4 p.m. with a wedding at 6 is no time to solve puzzles.

7 · After the big day

The best wedding signs are bought with year two in mind. Names-and-date pieces move straight into the home – above the bed, over the dresser – and get relit every anniversary. That is also the argument for buying over renting: a rental covers one night, while an owned sign becomes the most-photographed object in the house. Choose wording you will still like glowing above your bed in ten years. For destination weddings, an LED piece packs flat in a suitcase between clothing layers and survives the flight glass neon never could.

Short wording, oversized backdrop, battery backup – in that order. Shop color-first on the white and pink sign pages, or hand the wording to the customizer and preview it free. Order three weeks out in peak season and the timeline takes care of itself.

FAQ

Wedding Neon Sign FAQ

Q1 Should I rent or buy a wedding neon sign?

Buy, unless the sign is a single-night theme piece. Renting typically costs half to two-thirds of ownership, while an owned names sign moves into your home afterwards and relights every anniversary – the cost guide breaks down real pricing.

Q2 How long do battery-powered signs last?

A charged pack runs a full evening – generally 8–12 hours at mid brightness, longer at the low setting. For outdoor proposals, carry a spare pack; the swap takes seconds.

Q3 What size works behind the head table?

40–60 inches for a two-person backdrop so photos compose with the couple, 24–36 inches for the sweetheart table itself. When torn between two sizes, take the larger – undersized backdrops are the most common regret.

Q4 Can we use our own vows as the wording?

Yes – type any vow, lyric or inside phrase into our customizer and preview it in your font and color, free, before committing.

Q5 Will the venue allow a neon sign?

Almost always. LED pieces run on low voltage, stay cool and mount without wall damage on frames or command strips – the two things venues actually care about. Send the coordinator a photo of the mounting plan and you are through.

Q6 How fast can a custom wedding sign ship?

Most custom pieces are produced in a few days and shipped express. In peak season (May–October) order two to three weeks before the date so there is room for a remake if a detail changes.
