Buyer’s Guide
How to Choose an Open Sign for Your Store
An open sign is the hardest-working sign in your shop: it sells for you every hour the lights are on. The right one does three jobs at once – telling passers-by you’re open, setting the tone of your brand, and pulling foot traffic off the sidewalk. Here’s what matters when you choose one.

open sign read from across the street
1 · Size and viewing distance
Match the sign to the distance its message must travel. A sign that only needs to read from the sidewalk can stay compact; a sign competing with street traffic, glare and neighbouring shopfronts needs larger lettering and stronger output. Measure from across the street – not from your counter – before you pick a size.
2 · Brightness and dimming
Daylight is your open sign’s biggest competitor. A sign that glows beautifully at 9 p.m. can wash out behind a sunlit window at noon. Look for dimmable LED output with a remote, so the same sign works in both conditions – full brightness through the day, a softer glow for the evening and lower energy use after dark.

3 · Single or double-sided
Where will it live? A wall-mounted sign needs one face. A sign hanging in the window can work twice as hard with two – OPEN toward the street, CLOSED or a second message toward the counter. Double-sided hanging signs are the classic convenience-store and cafe setup for exactly this reason.
4 · Flash and display modes
A gentle flash or breathing mode catches the eye in a way static light doesn’t, especially at dusk on a busy block. Remote-controlled modes let you switch between static, flash and fade without touching the sign – which matters when it hangs out of easy reach.

LED vs glass open sign, side by side
5 · LED and glass: brightness and running cost
An open sign works longer hours than almost any sign you will ever own, so the power math matters more here than anywhere else. A medium LED open sign draws 15–30 watts; the same design in traditional glass neon needs roughly three to five times that, because a glass transformer must push thousands of volts through gas and loses more energy as heat along the way. At the U.S. average of about $0.17 per kWh, a 20 W LED open sign running 24/7 costs around $2.45 a month – a 60 W glass piece in the same window costs about $7.34. Brightness is not simply watts: LED converts nearly all of its input into light, which is why a low-watt LED board still out-glows a glass original at noon. LED also runs on 12–24 safe low volts your staff can handle and rehang; glass stays at 2,000–15,000 volts and belongs to the professional who installed it.
6 · Where the sign lives: window, door or porch
Three positions cover almost every shop. The classic is the window-hung sign: a slim chain or steel wire from the window frame, the board centered in the pane so it reads cleanly from the street, power cord routed down the frame’s shadow line with adhesive clips. Second is the wall-mount above the door – a single face at eye level (roughly 60–66 inches to center) greets everyone walking in and never fights window reflections. Third is the covered porch or under the awning: fine for standard indoor-rated signs as long as no rain reaches the board; a truly exposed outdoor position needs an explicitly weatherproof IP-rated sign on a covered GFCI outlet instead. Double-sided formats belong to the first group – hanging in the window is the only position where two faces both earn their keep.

7 · Trade by trade: what works on which block
The strongest open signs match the temperature of the room behind them. Restaurants and pizzerias go big and red – full brightness that holds its own against a hot pass and a busy street. Convenience stores and pharmacies lean on blue-and-white 24 HOURS formats built for all-night legibility. Salons, nail studios and lash bars choose soft pink or warm white script that flatters both the interior and the people in it. Barber shops run the oldest pairing in the book – an OPEN board beside the pole, cool white against the rotating red. Cafes and coffee shops favour rounded letterforms in warm yellow or warm white that suit a morning crowd. Bars and lounges add a second line – HAPPY HOUR or the house name – and run the dimmer down after sunset, when a softer glow actually sells better than full output.
Different trades lean on open signs differently: barber shops pair an OPEN sign with the pole; salons and nail studios choose softer pinks that match the interior; restaurants and pizzerias go big and red; cafes favour warmer, rounder lettering; convenience stores run 24-hour formats. Trade-specific setups are covered in the industry guides below.

FAQ
Open Sign FAQ
Q1 What does an open sign do for my business?
It converts foot traffic. Passers-by decide in seconds whether a shop is open; a bright, legible open sign removes that friction and works every hour you trade, with no staff attention required.
Q2 Do LED open signs use a lot of electricity?
No. LED neon runs on low-voltage power and draws far less than traditional glass neon, so running a sign all day costs a fraction of what shops expect. We break the numbers down in our electricity guide.
Q3 How long do LED open signs last?
LED modules typically outlast traditional glass neon by years of continuous use. For hour counts and which component actually wears out first, see our lifespan guide.
Q4 How do I hang an open sign in my shop window?
Most LED open signs hang on a slim chain or steel wire from the window frame, with the power cord routed to the nearest outlet. Full step-by-step instructions are in our hanging guide.
Q5 What size open sign do I need?
Size follows viewing distance: the further your sign must be read from, the larger the lettering. If your shopfront is deep or the street is wide, step up a size class. Details are in the sizing section above.
Q6 Can I get a custom open sign with my shop name?
Yes, and it is the most popular route. Design your name plus an OPEN element in our customizer, preview it for free, and we build it to your window’s measurements.
